Lighting Installation In Los Angeles

A recessed light in an existing ceiling takes about 2 to 3 hours, less with attic access. We lay the room out before we cut, so the light lands where you use it.

What Changes The Time

  • Attic access. With an attic above, the wire runs fast. Without one, each light takes longer.
  • The ceiling. Plaster cuts slower than drywall.
  • The circuit. A room that is already loaded may need a new circuit.
  • Dimmers and controls. One dimmer per zone is the usual choice.

A national guide puts the work at about two and a half hours per light in a finished house.

Layout Comes First

Lights spaced by where the joists allow leave the counter in shadow. We mark the layout on the ceiling and you approve it before the first hole. We patch what we open.

Other Lighting Work

Ceiling fans, under-cabinet lights, exterior and landscape lighting, and replacing old fixtures. For shops and offices see commercial electrician.

Questions We Hear A Lot

Do you need attic access for recessed lights?

No, but it helps. With an attic above, the wire runs fast. Without one, each light takes longer, and plaster ceilings cut slower than drywall.

Do you need an electrician to install recessed lighting?

For new lights in a ceiling, yes: it is new wiring. In California, anyone you hire for work that needs a permit has to be a licensed contractor, whatever the price.

How long does it take to install recessed lighting?

Plan on about two and a half hours per light in a finished house, less with open attic access.
