Who To Call First
- Smoke, flame, or a burning smell that does not stop. Leave the house and call 911.
- A wire down outside. Stay far away and assume it is live. Call 911.
- The whole block is dark. That is the utility’s side. LADWP: 1-800-342-5397 (1-800-DIAL-DWP), answered around the clock. Southern California Edison: 1-800-611-1911.
- Only your home is dark and the neighbors have light. LADWP’s own guidance: the trouble may be your main switch, a breaker or a fuse. That is our work.
Do not touch anyone who is in contact with a power source. Turn the power off at the main breaker if you can reach it safely and the floor is dry. Then call.

What Cannot Wait Until Morning
- Sparks from an outlet, a switch or the panel.
- A burning smell with no obvious source.
- Outlets or switch plates that are hot or discolored.
- A tingle when you touch an appliance.
- A breaker that trips again as soon as you reset it.
What Can Wait
A breaker that tripped once and held after you unplugged something. An outlet or a light that stopped working with no heat, no smell and no sparks. Anything you want installed or upgraded. We would rather tell you it can wait than charge you an after-hours rate you did not need.
What You Hear On The Phone
Before anyone drives out, you hear the arrival window and the after-hours rate, and you decide whether it can wait until morning. If the trouble is on the utility’s side of the meter, we say so instead of sending a truck.
On small repair jobs of $750 or less that you called the contractor for, California’s rules for service and repair contracts allow only one service charge, including any trip or inspection fee, and no payment is due until the work is done (Business and Professions Code 7159.10).
While You Wait
- Unplug what was running on the circuit that failed.
- Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
- Have the panel area clear so we can get to it.

Questions We Hear A Lot
What qualifies as an electrical emergency?
Anything with heat, smell or shock: sparks, a burning smell, hot or discolored outlets, a tingle from an appliance, or a breaker that will not stay on. Fire or a downed line is a 911 call before it is an electrician call.
Do electricians do emergency calls?
Some do, some send you to voicemail. We answer after hours for emergencies. If it turns out the problem is on the utility’s side of the meter, we tell you to call LADWP or Edison instead of sending a truck.
How fast can an electrician get here?
We give you an arrival window on the phone, before anyone drives out. At night and on weekends it depends on where you are. If it cannot wait, the steps on this page keep the house safe in the meantime.
How do I know if the outage is only my house?
Look at the neighbors and the street lights. If they have power and you do not, check your main breaker. If the whole block is dark, report it to your utility.
Power Out Right Now?
Call. If it is the utility’s problem, we say so.
